‘commutes’ by makella.a

a poem by Makella.a

i miss getting on trains

something about the way each carriage gets packed

with complete strangers pretending they’re not

looking at you from the corner of their eyes

as you sneak small glances here and there

trying not to romanticise

what they do and –

how they live and –

if their life has had any highs

if they too once had dreams

that surpassed even the

clouds in the skies

if they’ve ever had to cut ties

if their lives are built upon lies

if the person sitting next to them has

more similarities than they realise

i miss getting on trains

people packed together like sardines in a tin

what a world we live in
